UK Best Dishes Awards 2006

RESTAURANT MAGAZINE REDEFINES UK’S GASTRONOMIC MAP

The spotlight swings from London to Belfast, up to Scotland and down to Dartmoor.

On Monday 23rd October, Restaurant Magazine announces the winners of the UK Best Dishes Awards 2006. The diverse shortlist of restaurants ranges from star-studded London establishments of international repute to lesser lauded local secrets.

The awards are broken down into 15 categories: Burger, Cheese, Cooked Breakfast, Curry, Dim Sum, Fish & Chips, Pie, Pasta, Pudding, Roast Beef, Sausage & Mash, Soup, Steak & Chips, Sushi and Tapas. The awards have been judged by Restaurant Magazine in partnership with the Craft Guild of Chefs who together have examined over 500 entries and visited all of the restaurants 45-strong shortlist.

Although the categories are based on the dishes that are the staples of eating out in the UK today, many of the winning dishes are about creativity and innovation. The Cinnamon Club’s (Best Curry) Roast Saddle of Red Deer with Pickling Spices certainly outshines the usual curry staples whilst the Courgette Flowers dipped in Beetroot Tempura & stuffed with Buffala Mozzarella & Ortiz Anchovies from newcomer L restaurant (Best Tapas) shows a vivid imagination.

With winning dishes from Dartmoor to the Scottish Highlands, the awards help showcase the ample and often less recognised cooking talent that’s operating outside London.

“The UK Best Dishes Awards are about what’s on the plate and nothing but the plate,” explains Joe Warwick, Restaurant Magazine’s Editor. “Restaurants’ reputations or lack thereof were never taken into consideration, with the shortlist of finalists drawn from dish descriptions, ingredients used and recipes - with all references to restaurants’ names and locations removed. This meant that when it came to the dishes entered, the humble country pub was put on an equal footing with flash London operations. Think of the awards as a culinary FA Cup, where the little guys can take on the big guys and triumph.”
